On this coming Monday evening at its 7 p.m. meeting, the Charlottesville City Council will have a public hearing to consider ending the traditional Lee-Jackson official holiday in that city. The initiative is led by City Council member
Kristin Szakos, who has also called for the removal of Confederate statues in that city.
Again, this is political correctness run amuck. It flies in the face of genuine understanding, is purposely insulting and divisive, and is the kind of thinking that disrespects history, tradition, and heritage. It is imperative that we communicate our positive feelings to that governmental body. Let them know how you feel in sincere terms, but please refrain as much as possible from name-calling and anger or anything that would feed their self-righteousness.
This potential action is narrow-minded and punitive to the feelings of the 70 million good Americans who are descended from those who fought for the Confederacy. They are not here to speak for themselves, so it is once again up to us.

City Council is considering abandoning a holiday that honors two confederate generals. Lee-Jackson Day in Charlottesville could become a thing of the past.
City Councilor Kristin Szakos has long made the argument to City Council that the holiday should not an official city holiday.
“If people want to celebrate Lee and Jackson I have no objection to that, but for the city to close City Hall in commemoration of Lee and Jackson? I think a lot of our residents feel that doesn’t represent them. It
doesn’t represent me.”
It’s the timing of the holiday that bothers David Talbot.
“It isn’t that I think we should forget about history. It’s that I think it really takes away and detracts from Martin Luther King Day.”
But for Harry Wicks, he says it’s time to let it go, in a different way.
“That was then and this is now. We all love each other now and we can keep on moving.”

How about if you folks who don’t live if our fair city stay the heck out of our decisions about what we do and don’t do here.

Before I reply , may I assume that you , Mr. Zavada , are in favor of removing the time honored observance of the Lee and Jackson Day and the removal of memorials honoring the great heroes of Virginia ?
