J.V. ‘Joe’ Braxton — Orangeburg
J.V. “Joe” Braxton, 92, of Orangeburg, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at the Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, in the Chapel of Dukes-Harley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Danny McLellan officiating. Interment will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, Nov. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m., and all other times at the residence.
Joe was born on Aug. 1, 1921, in Screven County, Ga. He was the sixth of 13 children born to the late John Crawford Braxton and Jerusha Beard Braxton. He operated a truck stop in Georgia, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Navy Seabee. In 1948, he founded Braxton Construction Co., Inc., where he served as president until his retirement. Joe was a lifetime member of the Orangeburg Elks Lodge 897 and the American Legion, member of the USC Gamecock Club, and Sons of Confederate Veterans Rivers Bridge Camp 842. He attended Prospect Southern Methodist Church in Jamison. Joe was a mild-mannered gentleman and will be deeply missed by all who knew him and loved him.
Mr. Braxton was predeceased by his wife, Catherine “Kitty” Braxton; two sons, John C. Braxton and Randall B. Braxton; and eight siblings.
Survivors are two sons, J.V. “Buzz” Braxton II and Charles A. “Chuck” Braxton (Cathy), all of Orangeburg; four grandchildren, Jonathan Braxton, Matthew Braxton, Mary Braxton and Catherine Braxton, all of South Carolina; one brother, John Braxton of North Carolina; three sisters, Patricia Brewer of Georgia, Norine Clifton and Sara Padgett, both of Florida; and a special companion, Dorothy Collier of Orangeburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Prospect Southern Methodist Church, 585 Waterspring Road, Orangeburg, SC.
